Often when I work on a painting - in fact most of the time - the ideas emerge as I’m working. My starting point for this was the tree image, and then I wanted to have figures which have some kind of relationship to the tree. I think a lot about the climate crisis, and the idea of people rising up to protect nature has emerged in this piece.

This tree is from a photograph taken in my local park in Nottingham (which incidentally used to be part of Sherwood Forest).
